What is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a doctor that can help patients with neuromuscular disorders and how they affect our physical and mental health. Chiropractors can help patients with injuries to their soft tissues from obvious falls, car accidents, or overuse as well as help patients with troubling systemic issues such as indigestion, difficulty with digestion, breathing problems, trouble sleeping, dizziness, and many other conditions that a person may not consider chiropractors for.

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractors believe that the body has an innate or natural ability to heal itself and they work to restore that ability by making adjustments to the spine. If one or more of the bones (vertebrae) that protect the spinal cord are misaligned or subluxated the result is an inefficient working nervous system and inefficient healing. A chiropractor works to find the misalignment or subluxations and uses gentle force to help take the stress off of the nerves to allow normal function. The body then is allowed to do what it does best which is to regulate normal function and homeostasis.

Are chiropractors doctors?

Chiropractors undergo extensive training before treating patients for spine-related ailments. On average, chiropractors spend at least four years working on their Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). They cannot pursue this degree until they attend at least three years of undergraduate courses.

Chiropractic students complete a supervised clinical during their doctorate program prior to working as a solo practitioners. Depending on the state, a chiropractor may also need to pass licensing exams before practicing without supervision. Many chiropractors also pursue additional educational opportunities after college so that they have a thorough understanding of modern wellness techniques.

What does a chiropractor do?

A chiropractor like a medical Doctor will sit down with a patient and take a thorough history of the present problem as well as a history of the patient's health-related issues. This may include medications, accidents, current job employment, and recreational activities. A thorough examination including X-rays will also be performed to identify any subluxations or misalignments that may be negatively affecting nerve system function. At Olson Bros Chiropractic our patients will then do a number of therapies to prepare the body for a Chiropractic adjustment. This pre-adjustment therapy allows for better adjustment and outcomes for the patient. The Chiropractic adjustment is performed by the doctor placing his hands on the affected regions and applying a low-force but high-speed adjustment to the spine. It is very gentle and effective with patients often noticing immediate improvement.

Are chiropractors safe?

Chiropractic care is incredibly safe. Every year millions of people receive chiropractic adjustments with zero harmful effects. Often times people have heard of someone having a stroke after a Chiropractic adjustment. This is incredibly rare and research suggests that a person who "had a stroke after a chiropractic adjustment" was probably suffering from the stroke before they even went into the chiropractic office and prior to the chiropractic adjustment as strokes often produce neck pain and shoulder and arm pain. When compared with Medical treatment Chiropractic is much safer. Every year over 250,000 people die in America alone from Medically caused death or Iatrogenic death. Medical Physician's malpractice insurance, therefore, is incredibly expensive compared to Chiropractic malpractice insurance which is very inexpensive.

Are there chiropractic adjustment side effects?

Feeling amazing! In addition to this some patients may feel like they were "at the gym" or a kind of workout soreness but typically the patient will feel better almost immediately after their treatment.

How many chiropractic sessions do you need?

Each patient is different. A patient who has suffered from a bad back or neck for their entire lives will need more treatment to change the mechanical patterns in their spine that have led to their chronic problems and to achieve stability. Someone with severe pain and inflammation will also need to be seen more often. A typical patient will treat a little bit more frequently at the beginning of a treatment plan and then the visits will taper off as the patient improves.

How much does a chiropractic care cost?

Chiropractic care is very inexpensive when compared to Medical or Dental costs. Additionally, as a patient gets healthier and feel better naturally they will save thousands of dollars on Doctors visits to their MD and prescription medications which only mask the problems and allow them to worsen.

What does a chiropractor treat?

In addition to spinal complaints Chiropractors can help with general issues with extremities complaints of the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and feet including sports related injuries, car accident injuries and soft tissue injuries. Chiropractors also help patients with sleep issues, indigestion, ear infections, infantile colic, dizziness, migraine headaches, tension headaches and many other conditions. By helping improve nervous system function Chiropractic treatments allow the body to heal itself more effectively. Patients feel more energized, less fatigued and more clear headed.

How do chiropractors relieve pain from injuries or accidents?

Often times in a car accident or a fall or lifting injury the soft tissues attached to the spine are injured. The rapid acceleration or deceleration associated with accidents and falls produces misalignments in the spine. When this occurs the nerves become stressed or "pinched". this needs to be corrected by chiropractic visits. Ligaments are typically injured in car accidents and falls as well. This injury is called a sprain. When a sprain occurs the ligament is stretched and can no longer hold the bones of the spine in the proper position. Chiropractors will recommend and course of treatment to help to correct this alignment while the ligament heals. If this is NOT done after accidents the result is poor structure and misalignment and this will produce chronic pain and significant problems for the patient. It is vital to be seen after any type of accident including a car accident, sport or work-related accidents and even slip and fall or lifting related injuries.

Will I be required to remove my clothing at my appointment?

No. Our patients dress in all types of clothing and it is not required to remove any clothing at all for a chiropractic visit.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Yes. Children do amazing with Chiropractic care. In my opinion, all children should be seen by a chiropractor to help them with anxiety and stress and to help when all of the bumps and bruises and numerous falls have accumulated to cause symptoms.
